ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe (A106M – 18) is a Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service. ASTM A106 pipe is always produced by the seamless method and can be bent, coiled and flanged. In sizes less than 2″ is Internally coated A106 Steel Pipe usually produced as a cold drawn product. 2″ and up are usually hot finished. A106 Seamless Pipe is intended for use in high temperature applications. General characteristics steel seamless pipe grade A106 / A106M.- is a steel for high temperature service, SA 106 Gr B Material enables bending, welding and flanged among other operations. A106 Grade B or P265GH is a weldable pressure vessel and boiler steel grade pipe used by the world’s industrial fabricators.

ASTM A106 Grade B specification covers carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. These ASME SA 106 Gr B Line Pipe are suitable for welding, bending, flanging, and similar forming operations. Mechanical testing of the specimens shall include tensile, bending, flattening, hydrostatic and nondestructive electric tests. Specimens undergoing bending tests shall consist of sections cut from a pipe. For flattening tests, the specimens shall be smooth on the ends and burr-free, except when made on crop ends. All Seamless Pipe ASTM A106 Grade B tests shall be performed in room temperature. If any test specimen shows flaws it can be discarded and substituted for another test specimen. Before testing, if a specimen has scribe scratches, a retest shall be allowed. A retest shall also be allowed if a specimen breaks in an inside or outside surface flaw.

1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe for high-temperature service (Note 1) in NPS 1/8 to NPS 48 [DN 6 to DN 1200] (Note 2) inclusive, with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in ASME B 36.10M. It shall be permissible to furnish pipe having other dimensions provided such A106 Carbon Steel Pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification. A106 Steel Pipe ordered under this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging, and similar forming operations, and for welding. When the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that a welding procedure suitable to the grade of steel and intended use or service will be utilized.

NOTE 1: It is suggested, consideration be given to possible graphitization.
NOTE 2: The dimensionless designator NPS (nominal pipe size) [DN (diameter nominal)] has been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size.”

What is A106 Pipes?

A106 Pipe is most common grade of black carbon steel pipe (killed carbon steel pipe) used for high-temperature and high-pressure service. These ASTM A106 Gr.B Material are available in three grades A, B, and C of varying strength. Carbon Steel Pipe ASTM A106 Gr.b seamless pipe is one of our most widely used grade of carbon steel and is readily available ex-stock for all standard thicknesses up to SCH160. NPS 1-1/2 and under may be either hot finished or cold drawn. NPS 2 and larger shall be hot finished unless otherwise specified. Surface finish standards are outlined in the specification. ASTM A106 Grades A and ASTM A106 B are obtainable in most sizes and schedule numbers, SA106 Grade B permits higher carbon and manganese contents than Grade A. Inspection test pressures produce a stress in the pipe wall equal to 60% or specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) at room temperature. Maximum Pressures are not to exceed 2500 psi for NPS 3 and under and 2800 psi

for the larger sizes. Pressure is maintained for not less than 5 seconds.

Permissible Variations in Weights per Foot

Weight of any length shall not vary more than 10% over and 3.5% under that specified.

If no free Oxygen is found in the steel pipe then its called “Killed Carbon Steel“. Grade A106 Pipes must be produced with killed steel used for for High-Temperature Service. ASTM A53 is Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless.
ASTM A106 is Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service.

A53 Pipe vs A106 Pipe – (2) Applied Type of Pipe

A 53 can be welded seam or seamless depending on how it is specificed for purchase. It is a general steel pipe spec and covers galvanized pipe as well as black pipe.
A106 is a similar pipe in chemical composition but is intened for high temperature service (up to 750 Degs F). It is a seamless pipe.

At least in the US, there is usually A53 for welded pipe while A106 is seamless. If you ask for A53 in the US they will quote A106 as an alternate.

For example when we compare between A106-B and A53-B seamless from chemical composition point of view, we find that :

1. A106-B contains silicon, min. 0.10% where A53-B has zero%, and silicon is the important element for improving the heat resistance criteria.
2. A106-B contains manganese 0.29-1.06%, where A53-B 1.2%.
3. A106-B contains low sulfur and phosphorus, max. 0.035% where A53-B contains 0.05 and 0.045% respectively.
